Treatment for a Cold Sore

Usually a fever blister will go away in about 2 weeks all on its own.  However oral antiviral medicines can help get rid of these sores sooner.  To prevent them from showing up at all it is best to start this medication when the tingling or itching starts before a blister erupts.  Applying heat or ice to the sore may help reduce the pain.  It is recommended an antiseptic soap be used to cleanse the affected area.  Other non-traditional treatments include vitamin C, analgesics, acupuncture, laser therapy, and L-Lysine medications.  The laser therapy is called laser puncture and a narrow 3-5 mw beam is directed at the cold sore to increase healing.
